Licensing In Our Industry – Where do WE Stand On The Issue?

Licensing In Our Industry – Where do WE Stand On The Issue?

In last week’s blog we detailed our encounter with one of the more unscrupulous and brazen ‘unregulated’ PIs in our region – one who sought to ‘squat’ off our business address and steal our marketing materials, whilst claiming he didn’t need to be insured to work in this field. You can read more about that here should you wish.

That encounter leads us on this week to discuss our thoughts and feelings around the latest news that FINALLY strict licensing and enforced regulation will be brought to the investigation industry. Read more about Licensing In Our Industry – Where do WE Stand On The Issue?

Exposing Unscrupulous PI’s.

Exposing Unscrupulous PI’s.

We talk a lot in this blog space about the perils and dangers that come with using an unregulated and unqualified investigator, and in the past we’ve published guidelines as to how you can avoid the pitfalls that come with hiring or working with what we call ‘Gumtree Gumshoes’.

We call them ‘Gumtree Gumshoes’ because the pop culture nickname for a PI plays well against the fact these people don’t have insurance or any marketable skill-set in the industry, so they mainly advertise on free business listing sites and across social media only. There’s no website. There’s no office. There’s no professional affiliations. Just a demand to pay upfront and a mobile number – that can be swiftly junked when they disappear if the job goes wrong. Data Breaches, Newcastle City Council and Contradictory Control Measures.

Data Breaches, Newcastle City Council and Contradictory Control Measures.

Regular readers of the Surmount blog will recall our entry back in November 2017 in relation to the conduct of Newcastle City Council and the poor and concerning manner in which they handle confidential data.

The matter stemmed from a now infamous data breach at the hands of Newcastle City Council which was the result of a bulk email sent in June of 2017 to 77 recipients that led to the disclosure of various personal details such as home addresses, dates of birth and so on of adopting parents and adopted children. An Untrustworthy Employee – A Staff Disciplinary Case Study

An Untrustworthy Employee – A Staff Disciplinary Case Study

Our Newcastle city centre based client got in touch with us after having Surmount recommended to them by a previous organisation we’d worked with, checking us out online and liking what they saw. They brought us in to consult with regards to concerns they had regarding one of their staff.

The staff member had a sales role within the company that required them to travel the region and meet with selected prospective customers that had been cultivated by the company’s engagement team. The prerequisite of the job was that a certain amount of sales calls per day was expected. Read more about An Untrustworthy Employee – A Staff Disciplinary Case Study

The Perils of National Investigation Services.

The Perils of National Investigation Services.

More and more of late the field of professional investigation is being plagued by ‘national’ agencies who disingenuously pretend they have “regional reach” into – in our case – places like Newcastle, Tyne and Wear, Northumberland and the rest of the North East.

Routinely they are London based or thereabouts. There is no one main investigative head office or HQ and no hierarchy of investigators. It is simply a website that splinters off to suggest it is local to you dependent on where you’re searching for. The people behind this ‘agency’ might be based in Essex or wherever, but it’s imperative to them that you believe they are based in your city where ever you are. Supporting Landlords And Letting Agents In The North East

repossession propertyOur Newcastle based Landlord client had a property portfolio that included a number of varying-sized residential properties throughout the region along with some commercial units. At one of his fully furnished residential properties he was reaching the end of his tether with his tenant, a female in her late twenties that we’ll call ‘Carol’.

‘Carol’ was behind in her rent by months and starting to ignore our client’s attempts to get in touch with her and facilitate payment. Things had reached such a point that an eviction notice had been served and ‘Carol’ was required to pack up and leave. Read more about Supporting Landlords And Letting Agents In The North East

We receive many, many enquiries a week from people looking to trace individuals for a multitude of reasons and we have an incredibly high standard as to whether we take the case on or not.

This week, especially in light of the implementation of the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) on 25th May 2018, we wanted to take a closer look at the grounds to which we will and will not complete people tracing. Read more about Tracing Someone: An Explanation of the Legalities

Surmount Investigations’ GDPR statement.

Surmount Investigations’ GDPR statement.

After a brief period of mild panic whereby half the population considered GDPR to be the new Y2K, the finish line for GDPR compliance has now finally arrived into sight and companies throughout Europe are now all ‘set up’ and in line with the requirements of the new legislation.

For those who are unaware, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is an EU regulation on data protection and privacy for all individuals. It aims primarily to give control to citizens and residents over their personal data. As per Wikipedia:
